TV Production Company Search for Sycamore Gap Memories

A TV production company is looking for people to share their memories of Sycamore Gap for a documentary on its felling. Last year, it was announced that Candour Productions would make a two-part documentary, with the working title of “Slaying at Sycamore Gap”.

The IC Newcastle site is reporting that in May, two men were found guilty of carrying out a “moronic mission” to chop down the tree in September 2023. On July 15, Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 33, both from Cumbria, will be sentenced for causing criminal damage to the tree and Hadrian’s Wall.

The documentary is said to include exclusive access to Northumbria Police’s never-before-seen investigation assets, witnesses, suspects, police officers and case experts; to chronicle the investigation and explore the impact that the felling had on the local community and around the world.

It also aims to celebrate the “icon” of North East imagery and identity, whilst capturing the outrage and disbelief that people expressed at the crime.

Candour Productions said: “We appreciate how special the Sycamore Gap tree was to people not only in the North-East, but across the UK and even around the world. From hikes and picnics to proposals and memorials, the site has been a beautiful backdrop for decades and we would like to try and include people’s memories of it.”

Anna Miralis, senior commissioning editor of documentaries at Channel 4 said: “The felling of this iconic and much-loved tree sent shock waves across the world.

“With the mix of extraordinary access to this unique investigation and an award-winning director, this documentary is guaranteed to be both enlightening and utterly compelling. It is my hope it will offer up some understanding on what drove those to commit such a senseless crime.”
