Newcastle Airport Drive Thru Coffee & Electric Vehicle Hub

Newcastle Airport Plans Drive-thru Coffee Shop & Electric Vehicle Charging Hub

The new electric vehicle charging facility will be built on Newcastle Airport land at Callerton Parkway and it is hoped the project will be completed this year. Plans for a drive-thru coffee shop and electric vehicle charging hub near Newcastle Airport have been announced.

The airport is working with vehicle charging company Fastned to create an ultra-rapid EV charging station with 12 bays on land at Callerton Parkway.

The hub, which will have more bays than any other EV charging site in Newcastle, supports the airport’s goal to achieve Net Zero Carbon status by the year 2035. Construction work on the scheme is expected to begin later this year.

The chargers will be powered entirely by renewable energy and are capable of adding up to 300 miles of range to fully electric cars in around 20 minutes. Dean Ward, director of commercial at Newcastle Airport, said: “Achieving Net Zero Carbon status by 2035 is a key priority for the airport so we are delighted that work to build the new ultra-rapid charging hub is under way.

“The hub will significantly enhance the local EV charging infrastructure, making it easier and more convenient for our passengers, staff and the wider community to travel by electric vehicle, which will help reduce emissions and improve local air quality. This development marks another key milestone on our sustainability journey and adds to the fantastic work taking place right across our business to create a greener and more sustainable future for the region.”

Tom Hurst, UK country director for Fastned said: “We’re excited to have broken ground at Newcastle Airport and to build the city’s next major ultra-rapid EV charging hub. This station will be built in Fastned’s flagship drive-thru format. This makes it easier for drivers of all vehicles to get to a charger and plug in, overall making the whole charging experience even more seamless. I’d like to thank our partner Newcastle Airport as it has been instrumental in getting this project off the ground.”

Last month the airport published its 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance report, in which it said it had reduced carbon emissions by 4% between 2023 and 2024, contributing to a total decrease of 34% since 2019. It also highlighted increased recycling and the role played by its solar farm, which can provide 100% of the electricity needs of its terminal on a sunny day.

The airport has previously announced a target of being net zero by 2035 by looking to reduce the environmental impact of staff and passenger commutes, as well as its energy use. While acknowledging that it is more difficult to reduce emissions from aircraft, it also has plans to encourage the use of more sustainable aviation fuel.

The new charging hub is close to the A696 and A1 main roads. It is hoped that it will be used by taxi drivers and other people picking up passengers from the airport, as well as general visitors.
