Mezzanine Flooring – Benefits and Uses

If you’re thinking of installing a mezzanine flooring either in your workplace or at home, but don’t know where to begin then don’t worry, you have come to the right place. Whether it’s to help in terms of storage or it’s to make your distribution process easier, there are lots of great reasons to consider installing one.

While it may be an overwhelming decision to make, there are lots of great reasons to consider investing in your own mezzanine floor. With that in mind, here is a guide to Mezzanine floors and what they can be used for.

What Is A Mezzanine Floor?

For those that don’t know, mezzanine flooring is an intermediate floor that has been built between two main floors or between the floor and ceiling of a building.

Usually, mezzanines are designed to cover only a specific area of a building, as it makes them much more accessible because they’re not covering the entire floor space. They’re most commonly accessed by stairs but there are alternative methods too.

As standard, mezzanines are custom-made and will have been manufactured from detailed drawings as they are tailored to the needs and specifications of each client. Typically, they will be constructed from steel, however, they can also be tailored to suit their settings.

Alongside the main structure, there are a number of key components to a mezzanine floor:

Primary beams – these span across the columns and are the main support or the mezzanine.

Purlins or joists – these span between the primary beams and act as fixing points for the decking.

Columns – these are designed to help support the primary beams, helping to distribute the load bearing.

Decking – The 38mm particleboard is the most commonly fitted option for mezzanines, however, other varieties include OSB, grating, durbar plate, concrete and composite decking.

What Are They Used For?

Warehousing – for those that work in warehousing, mezzanine floors can provide ideal storage solutions that are considered to be a lot more robust than racking and shelving. If you have lots of stock and equipment to store, it can provide an effective way to access everything when required.

Distribution – with sudden changes when it comes to supply and demand, warehousing requirements can often change within days. Mezzanine floors can provide a great solution as it can help with additional distribution space as and when required.

Retail – if you’re increasing the stock in your store and you find you’re starting to run out of space, a mezzanine is a great way to add additional space without having to invest in new premises.

Office – increasing the space you have in your office can be incredibly difficult but as your business grows, you need to grow with it. A mezzanine floor, of course, can allow you to make space for new employees without the need to move.

Manufacturing – no matter how prepared you are, you will always find that you run out of space when it comes to manufacturing. Whether it’s the space to store finished products or the space for machinery, a mezzanine floor is a great solution to help improve workflow.

Production – mezzanine floors are very commonly used to help reduce production costs, especially when a business starts to grow.
