Here’s which four Newcastle restaurants have been rated among the very best in Britain by OpenTable. A round-up of the best restaurants in the UK includes four in Newcastle, it has been announced.
In great news for the local dining scene, at a time it needs a boost as Christmas bookings take a hit amid concerns over rising Omicron cases, OpenTable is shining a spotlight on the city in its annual list of the top 100 restaurants in the UK.
The report, as published by the Newcastle Chronicle. includes four in Newcastle which, already hugely popular amongst locals, are now set to be more in demand than ever.
Among them are two set up by leading Newcastle chef Terry Laybourne, The Saltwater Fish Company, inside Fenwick Food Hall, and The Broad Chare on the quayside which in autumn also took a remarkable second place in Big 7 Travel’s round-up of The 50 Best Gastropubs in the UK.
Also included on the online reservation site OpenTable’s list of Britain’s best are two in Jesmond: Peace & Loaf, headed up by Dave Coulson, a past runner-up on Masterchef: The Professionals, and The Asian fusion restaurant Sohe.
All are consistent high achievers, regularly earning rave online reviews, and both Saltwater and Peace & Loaf made the Top 100 list in 2019.
Open Table said of drawing up its top line-up this time around: “To determine the list, we analysed more than 960,000 reviews from restaurants across the UK – all submitted by verified OpenTable diners.
“The result is a selection of spots across the country that constantly serve up creative dishes, unparalleled hospitality, and one-of-a-kind dining experiences for all occasions.”

Their success follows earlier recent news of more awards for some of the city’s eateries.
Among them was My Delhi street food restaurant which was celebrating for the second time within a month when it was named best street food restaurant of the year at the Asian Curry Awards in London soon after winning the same title at the English Curry Awards in Birmingham.
And Khai Khai on the quayside won the UK’s Best Innovative Restaurant Concept at the British Curry Awards.

Newcastle has also recently welcomed newcomers to the scene, including tapas restaurant Cafe Andaluz near the monument; Long Friday in Jesmond – a second restaurant by Cook House’s Anna Hedworth – and restaurant-bar Twenty Twenty in the Bigg Market.
