Greggs Jobs to £21m North East transport Interchange
North East bakery Greggs is set to open a new store at the newly opened South Shields transport interchange.
The Newcastle-headquartered food chain will open a new shop at the £21m interchange later this month as part of its strategy of focusing on transport hubs.
Located in the centre of South Shields, the newly-completed interchange opened at the beginning of August as part of a £100m South Shields 365 regeneration masterplan, and comprises a modern bus station as well as a Metro station.
Customer services director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, commented: “It’s great to welcome such a popular and high profile retailer as Greggs to the new interchange in South Shields.
“The new facility gives the town the best new railway and bus station in Britain that will be used by seven and half million passengers a year. We have had great feedback from passengers who have already used the new Interchange.
“A Greggs store is ideal for commuters who need to grab delicious and convenient snacks and drinks while they make their daily journeys.”
The new shop will feature cafe-style seating and comes less than a month after the launch of Greggs’ first Newcastle drive-thru.
Roisin Currie, retail and people director for Greggs, added: “We’re delighted to be able to invest in South Shields, bringing new jobs to the area and providing both new and existing customers with a modern and convenient new shop.”
