New training academy launched at Armstrong Works to shape next generation of North East engineers. A new training academy has been launched at a Tyneside defence specialist amid moves to develop workers’ skills as the firm’s order book grows.
The new centre has been launched by Responsive Engineering in Newcastle, to focus on vocational skills in engineering and welding, and it follows the firm’s base Armstrong Works securing accreditation by manufacturing skills experts, EAL. The accreditation allows Responsive Engineering’s learning and development team to deliver qualifications for employees, tailored to the needs of the business.
The qualifications, including NVQs, will be delivered by training staff and supported by the workforce who can help to shape the development of their colleagues. Responsive Engineering said the creation of a dedicated training academy within an engineering business is unusual, as accreditation is more often provided to colleges and training providers.
The academy will play a vital role at the business, which has received substantial orders across the defence, rail and energy sectors. As a result, a number of apprenticeship roles are on offer, to join the existing cohort of 24 apprentices with Armstrong Works, which also houses parent company Pearson Engineering, alongside roles for graduates and experienced manufacturers.
The company’s new status as a training provider complements its existing in-house Weld Academy, which has seen three welders pass apprenticeships supported by a tutor who came back to Responsive Engineering after he retired, to lend his extensive expertise.
Neil Mawson, learning and development manager at Responsive Engineering, said: “With our Weld Academy tutor’s support, the 2nd year welding and plating apprentices at Responsive Engineering have all gained valuable tuition, guidance and instruction to support them in achieving the required welding coding to successfully complete more complex fabrications.”
Responsive is currently involved in work with the British Army’s major armoured vehicle programmes in collaboration with Pearson Engineering, a leading defence sector contractor working on significant UK and international projects.
Both companies are currently delivering parts such as armour packs for the next generation of equipment to protect British Armed Forces.
Rachel Mansfield, managing director at Responsive Engineering, said: “This is an exceptional achievement for our team and it truly highlights the commitment we have to our people and the future of our workforce. Grassroot roles are so important, not only to provide individuals with opportunities, but also to support our economy and regional prosperity. I’m looking forward to seeing this academy flourish as our business grows.”
