The STEMFest science exhibition for children and young people is coming to Darlington in March. Hosted by the North East STEM Hub, which is delivered by RTC North, in partnership with Darlington Borough Council, the two-day event aims to inspire and encourage children, between the ages of 10 and 13, to consider a future career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).
Around 1,500 school children from across the Tees Valley are expected to visit the exhibition, with 21 schools in Darlington already confirming their attendance.
The srticle from the Northern Echo says the event is taking place on 6 and 7 March at Mowden Park Rugby Club, STEMFest will feature interactive zones where students can take part in a series of fun-filled, hands-on activities relating to different STEM careers and industries.
Sponsored by Cummins and supported by more than 40 local STEM businesses, the exhibition is an opportunity for children and young people to find out more about this growing industry and make a real-world connection between what they are learning in the classroom and the work environment; while showcasing the wide range of STEM careers and jobs available in Darlington and the Tees Valley.
Cllr Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, Darlington Borough Council, said: “The STEM sector is a significant and important part of our local economy; offering highly skilled, well-paid jobs which will help people to remain living and working in the town once they have completed their education.
“We continue to work hard to attract STEM industries to the town and a key part of this is making sure there are enough skilled people to fill these roles. Events like this are a great opportunity to get children and young people excited and interested in a career within this growing industry and to highlight STEM careers as a realistic and desirable prospect for their futures.
Claire Willis, Team Leader for the North East STEM HUB said: “I am delighted that STEMFest is coming to Darlington. There are so many North East companies working in STEM sectors which our future workforce isn’t aware of.
“Through this event, we aim to enthuse and engage young people in STEM, highlight not only the companies, but also the various career paths open to these young people, right on their doorstep.”
